This doodle was dedicated to Anandibai Joshi who was India’s first Western woman doctor, released on 31st March 2018, Anandi’s 153rd birthday.
Anandi, at the age of 9, was married to Gopalrao Joshi who encouraged her to study right after they got married. They lost their infant child due to lack of proper healthcare in India at the time and this prompted Anandi to pursue medicine in the US. She had to go through a lot before she could finally study at the women’s university in Pennsylvania. And even after becoming one of the first women doctors and the first Indian woman to ever set foot on American soil, Anandi soon passed away because of tuberculosis. Her journey however paved way for many many women to be able to pursue education and higher studies.
Indian astronomers have even named a crater on Venus after her!

CNN invited 9 artists from across the globe to share their experience of creating art during the COVID-19 pandemic isolation.
I was extremely lucky to be at home with my husband and a couple of friends along with their three year old. My friends had recently moved to Bangalore and were in search of an apartment when the lockdown suddenly started and ended up living with us.
We began to live like a joint family, cooking meals together, dividing chores and taking care of the child and each other. We divided the house into office area and play area where all of us dispersed to after breakfast only to reconvene at dinner post work. While we missed our actual families and could see them only via video calls, this co-living situation kept us sane in the unprecedented times.

We decorate various animals on various occasions as a part of our culture.
A horse is decked with fabric and is a ride for the groom on the wedding day, an elephant is always adorned with colours in a temple and cows are decorated with pigments and flowers before being worshipped.
This series is my tribute to the celebration of these animals.
